Succinct Update: 3/21/11 @ 11:37 a.m.

This morning, just before surgery, the doctors took off Samuel's CPAP mask, and he opened his beautiful eyes for the first time in almost a day and a half. He was all cute and blinky. Tough, too. He's tolerated all the poking and prodding with nary a whimper. Hoping it's not just the effect of sedation...he'll need his strength.

Anyway, got word about a half hour ago. Samuel has been successfully placed on the heart-lung bypass machine. So far, so good...
